Helping your child learn to read is one of the most exciting parts of being a parent. It can also be one of the most stressful. Reading is a skill that opens the doors of opportunity for kids. But how can we make sure they’re on the right track if we’re not teachers ourselves? No matter the age or stage of your little reader, the Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app is a great place to start.

We’re particularly excited about the most recent app update, as we’ve added a whole new set of resources for Pre-K learners who are still working on identifying letters and letter sounds. Starting today, the Learn to Read app will also include The Big Reading Show! Now, when you download the app for the first time, you’ll start at a screen that looks like this:
From here, tap to view and unlock each level within the Pre-K Big Reading Show Section.
The Kindergarten and First Grade sections will now look like this. So, whether you’re downloading for the first time, or updating the app, there’s a new look and feel we think you’re really going to love, plus all the features you’ve come to value as part of your child’s learning experience.

These simple tips will help your child get the most out of the Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app.
  1. Begin at the beginning. Start your child with The Big Reading Show, and work your way up. This is the best way to be sure your child knows all of the letters and letter sounds, and then sounds (phonemes) and words he will need to know in order to read. Plus, it gives him a boost of self-confidence by starting on a level that may even be a little bit easy for him.
  2. Practice makes perfect! Hooked on Phonics is a comprehensive learn-to-read program. It was designed to make kids WANT to play the games, listen to (and sing!) the songs, and read the eBooks multiple times. The more they use it, the more they will learn. Check out the eBook Library within the app for practice, anytime.
  3. Make it work for you. If you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re always on the go. We sometimes get caught up in thinking that if we can’t do something important (like doing a reading app with our children) every day, we shouldn’t do it at all. But Hooked on Phonics was designed with busy families in mind. You’ll be amazed what as little as 15 minutes, twice a week can do!
  4. Celebrate success! Your child thrives on praise from you. Encourage your child to read the included eBooks aloud to parents, grandparents, friends, family members… even your dog! Learning to read is a huge accomplishment, and these eBooks will make her feel empowered, because using the app will build the exact skills needed to read each title. The more your child practices reading aloud, the more fluent he will become. Showing interest in your child’s achievements tells her that reading is important to you and that you are proud of her accomplishments. You can also show your child the Trophy Room, within the app. In the Trophy Room, kids can view their collection of accomplishments.
