Oh the Places You’ll Go DIY Keepsake

Oh the Places DIY Blog header

A while back we posted a sweet idea on Facebook, incorporating one of our absolute favorite Dr. Seuss titles, Oh the Places You’ll Go. A super-sweet dad had the adorable idea to use this book as a sort of yearbook for collecting notes from his daughter’s teachers throughout the years, and presented it to her at her high school graduation, a moving and sentimental keepsake.

We thought we’d take this idea even further with a jump-start to making this  thoughtful graduation gift, should you want to start this tradition for  your little one. It’s never too early (or too late) to begin!

Oh the Places You'll Go bookplate DIY

We’ve created this fun, printable book plate to personalize the front inside cover of a new copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go.  If you start passing a copy around to your child’s teachers at the end of this school year, by the time your child graduates high school, we’d bet you will have filled up all 54 pages with sweet sentiments and fun memories for your child! The book plate reads:

[WRITE IN CHILD’S NAME]
We’d be so grateful if help us you would.
We have a new plan that we think is quite good.
We’ll ask teachers and coaches, from now to forever
To share thoughts on our child, our near, dearest treasure.
So would you be so kind as to flip through this book
Choose a page, write a note, and back on this we’ll look
Our one-day high school grad will look back and see
Just how much they’ve meant to you and to we?

If you’re not familiar with this book, it’s traditionally a favorite gift for graduates this time of year, as it starts:

Congratulations! Today is your day! You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

…And goes on to detail the challenges one might encounter venturing out into the world, in that classic, lovable Seussy style.

You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to great heights…Except when you don’t. Because sometimes you won’t. I’m sorry to say so but sadly it’s true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you.

The book ends on an inspiring, uplifting note, stating:

And will you succeed? Yes! You will indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed!)…You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So. . . get on your way!

We’d love to see photos of your child with his or her copy, once you’ve finished the project, and happy graduation season!
